Philadelphia, 1908

The city buzzed with the hum of industry, its skyline dominated by towering smokestacks and sprawling factories. Amidst this urban expanse stood the grand edifice of Jameson Textiles, a leading manufacturer in the booming textile industry. Its red brick façade was a striking symbol of industrial prowess; with its rows of arched windows, and belching plumes of thick, curling black smoke, it cast an imposing profile. Inside, rows of mechanical looms, constructed of metal and wood, clattered and waved their automatic arms, while men, women, and children moved quickly, threading needles, adjusting tensions and alignments, inhaling the heavy odor of oil and cotton that was generated by the activities.

Henry Thompson, a young clerk of twenty-five, sat at his modest desk in the corner of the large, shared office. His job was to manage an endless stream of paperwork, processing orders, and maintaining meticulous records. Surrounded by stacks of invoices and ledgers, the low lighting caused him to squint and peer at his work like a subterranean mole. Henry was often left with a constant ache in his temples and a lingering experience of fatigue, a fatigue that was as ubiquitous the monotonous drone of the machinery and the unending banging of the equipment just outside the office doors.
